Well, I'm happy!

Back 12 years ago or so, I bought my condo in Phoenix. A cat started hanging around, black, dirty, and she acquired two names: SK for Scaredy Kat and RB for Roller Babe. She loved rolling in the dust, thus her dirtiness. The SK portion was she loved rubbing up against you but would run away when you tried to pet her.

Eventually she decided that I was good people and would let me pet her. Still, the names seemed appropriate, with SK becoming the dominant name.

I fed her, had a little house for her in the winter (two U-Haul boxes, one inserted into each other, forms a small opening that is a good wind block, and a drop cloth gives nice padding), she as an excellent pet. She recognized either the sound of my car or my parking space and frequently greeted me. I wouldn't let her in my condo, though I would have loved to have her as an indoor cat, because several friends of mine had allergies. She still managed to sneak in occasionally.

Back around 2002, I was unemployed and out of money, so I moved back to my parents for a few months, and I took her with me. My parents had several outdoor cats, they were fed and provided with beds, and it worked pretty well. SK seemed to like it there. I got another job, moved back to the condo, but decided to leave her at my parent's. Then I met Russet, got married, and moved to Cloudcroft. Outdoor cats aren't viable up there because there are foxes, bobcats, and other critters. Add to that the fact that Russet is allergic, SK stayed in Phoenix.

I spent time with her every time we were in town, and I knew she wouldn't be around forever. She was probably over 15 years old, and outdoor cats don't normally live that long. So I was not terribly surprised when my mom called me a couple weeks ago to tell me that she was dead. They had just lost another one of the cats, apparently to a coyote. I shall not relate the somewhat grisly details. But not long after that, SK went missing, did not return, and my mother feared the worst.

Well, tonight I got another call from my mom. A friend from across the street came over and said she saw a "cat found" poster one block up and five blocks over that mentioned a black cat. My mom drove over and had to park a few houses down and across the street. As she was walking up to the house, SK came out from under a parked RV and ran up to her and basically wouldn't leave her alone!

Mom thought she'd have to go get the cat carrier from home, but SK was quite happy in the car. She looked around the back seat, then jumped into the front seat, climbed into my mom's lap, and stated there for the drive home.

It'll be really good to see SK when we go to Phoenix next weekend.

We've lost a lot of cats over the years to violence, I was overjoyed when my mom told me the news!

I'm glad that SK's OK. having lost a couple of beloved pets in the last few years, I definitely understand the dread that comes with that kind of news.

I was glad to get to see my Dad's cat Gordon this last weekend, too. He's pushing 18 or so, and I'm not sure I'll get to see him again as he's getting pretty old and frail. I felt lucky for that last chance.
