In the DSLR category, I think I'm in total agreement. I just looked at Canon's line, and their lowest end camera, a Rebel T7i, has 24 MP resolution for $750ish. 14 years ago, the first Canon Eos Digital Rebel was 6.3 megapixels and $1000 with the 18-55mm kit lens. That T7i is half the price that my 6D cost with another 4 or 5 MP. I'm not concerned about a Rebel having more megapixels than my 6D because I have a full-frame sensor and a better image processor behind the scenes: Canon is not going to rip-off their prosumer buyers by moving that tech to their Rebel line.
I can't comment on other camera series like 4/3rds or mirrorless. Cool tech, but I'm not really familiar with them.
With all equipment being more or less equal, then it comes down to knowledge and technique and an experienced shooter will more consistently produce better results than a casual shooter. And an inexperienced shooter buying expensive equipment will never produce consistently superior results.
When I replaced my original Digital Rebel, I gave it to my dad. He had a film Rebel so he could use his lenses on the Digital. He's since stopped using it in favor of a small Sony, and I have no problem with that. I'm thinking of taking it back and having it modified for full-time IR. When I checked a few years ago, it was a $300 procedure to remove the hi-pass filter and re-focus the camera, but it produces VERY cool results.... Of course, that all depends on me becoming employed once again.
