I got it into my head that the chap was at least 50, to match the 50 year anniversary.

A 50-year-old man is still a little boy in the secret places of his mind. I'm 73 (almost 74) and I still miss my daddy.

He decidedly was not young, and about 50 feels about right to me. Your pegging him at 50 to match the anniversary is genius!
