I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect they can't be 100% sealed as they probably need to out-gas when it's hot outside.  But that's just a guess.  If that is the case, you could seal them and have a check valve, but given manufacturing tolerances, I wouldn't expect an American-made car by the Big Three to be absolutely trustworthy.
