It's not just that they're a monolith, they're also integrating aspects of their OS across their platform: you can now run iPhone/iPad apps, to a degree, on your laptop.  So a vulnerability in one OS can theoretically be exploited across multiple types of devices.  They have to be extra vigilant and proactive in fixing problems and pushing patches.
