Poodle Chaperone

Last week it looked like the room arrangements for my going to Ohio was going to be Russet in one room with her sister Lise, me in a different room, and I would be going to a bed and breakfast Tuesday through Friday. There had been talk of me staying with a neighbor, something that I found utterly unacceptable. It would have been one thing had I known the parents, known the neighbor, etc. But not knowing the neighbor? No way.

For me, the most important aspect of coming to Oberlin a week in advance was to meet Brian because, in all likelihood, this would be my only opportunity to meet him. I would have met Russet's parents in Cloudcroft/Alamogordo in September when they were down from Ohio, but I caught a cold just a day or so before going up. I was not happy. Russ was grilled by them in my place and apparently acquitted me well. Brian & Clare sent me a letter wishing me a speedy recovery to which I wrote a reply, probably the only hand-written letter that I'd written in a decade.

Well, once again Russet came to my defense and told everyone here that the main reason that I wanted to come early was to spend time with and meet Brian, and apparently it worked. When I arrived Friday, I put my suitcases in the room with Russet's stuff and nothing's been said.

(It was also an odd double-standard potentially being applied against me. Russet had previously brought a boyfriend over during a college break and they had the same room, but then when her sister Monica married Pete, Clare didn't let them share a room until after the ceremony.)

But Friday night (and Saturday night) was interesting.

We suspect Clare had a long discussion with Celeste and talked her into being a chaperone for us. We went to bed, and immediately Celeste jumped onto the bed directly between us. I had to move quickly to prevent an errant paw from a 50 lb dog from interfering with my honeymoon, in fact I had to do that more than once. The peculiar thing is that normally Celeste never gets on the bed, though it's known that she's a bit of a wimp when it comes to thunderstorms. As far as we know and could hear, there weren't any thunderstorms that night, but she would not stay off the bed! Finally we convinced her to stay at the foot of the bed.

Saturday night we fared no better. We go to bed, Celeste jumps in before we're under the covers. This time Russet had forgotten to give her a Benedryl to help Celeste with her allergies. Frequently she gives the poodle two because she sometimes spits one out, apparently this time she didn't, and either because of dosage or the poodle being pooped, the dog turned unto a semi-conscious zombie. We scooted her onto the foot of the bed at Russet's feet because she likes a little weight on her feet/legs when she sleeps and we turned in.

Celeste was fine come Sunday and had lots of fun with us at the Illumination and geocaching and such.

But Sunday night saw no Chaperone Celeste. For what ever reason, she was content to sleep on the floor. Not that it mattered, aside from some cuddling and kissing, we haven't engaged in any scandalous behavior.
