An interesting observation of paranoia vs the panopticon

Waiter Rant is an interesting blog, the guy has talked about life in NYC. More recently he's gotten married, had a child, and stopped waiting. Currently he's working with mental patients, and recently had an encounter with a paranoid who was talking about the government and others always watching him.

What do you say to a person like that? In the institution there were cameras all over the place for the safety of both patients and workers, the government is spying all over the place, computers are hacked and monitored, he IS being spied upon constantly.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you.

And we seem to accept the idea that "if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear" is an acceptable substitute for actual privacy.
