RIP: J. Geils
We lost a rocker last week, and I haven't seen word one on DW/LJ. *sigh*
J. Geils was the founder of the J. Geils Band, best known for hits such as Angel Of The Centerfold, Love Stinks, and Freeze-Frame. The band was founded in 1967! He was found dead at his home of apparent natural causes, he was 71.
The album Love Stinks was released in 1980, Freeze-Frame followed the next year and was the band's 12th album. They didn't last much longer as a band and broke up in 1985, but started the inevitable reunion tours in 1999. Geils himself went on and did several solo albums throughout the years.
I'm quite fond of Love Stinks, they were pretty solid rockers. That album, aside from the title track, also had some great ones in the forms of Come Back and No Anchovies.

J. Geils Band was a pretty big name for their time, I guess that time is too long past. I was selling audio equipment when Love Stinks and Centerfold came out, I heard those two albums All... The... Time. Fortunately they were pretty good. I loaded Love Stinks on my iPhone and listened to it last week. I think it holds up as an excellent piece of '80s rock. Last week I had some dental work done, and I really like my dentist because we can talk '70s/'80s rock. The one thing we totally agree upon is rockers that write/sing/perform their own music: not just pretty boys who sing and dance. That's why I'll take people like Paul Simon or Mark Knopfler over Boy Band of the Month any day. They may not be the best singers, but they do it all, and I don't care about dancing or being pretty.

I did not know that! I have a complete (to my knowledge) Weird Al collection built over the years. I'd heard that song, but didn't realize it was based on JGB. Thank you for the information, it was nice to listen to.
