Cameras and lenses destroyed during last month's solar eclipes

I could weep. Truly, I could weep. It includes a video of a guy destroying a Canon Digital Rebel XL by pointing it at the sun through a bigass Canon telephoto without a filter on the lens, purely as a demonstration. Burns right through the sensor, damages the mirror: you can see wisps of smoke when he removes the body from the lens.

One camera was protected by a drop-in filter. No damage to the camera. The lens, however, had to have the diaphragm replaced.

I don't think I want to look at such footage myself. It's a more trivial example of willful stupidity that you discuss here compared to many we see around us these days, but I am inclined to take your word without question on this.

I suppose I wouldn't expect everyone to understand the laws of physics, but it does seem like the collective intelligence of our world is steadily declining. Or maybe it's a general diminishing of common sense. (o.O)
