Much belated RIP: Melanie, 76

Melanie, also known as Melanie Safka, was a singer/song writer/musician in the folk, pop, and country genres.

From her Wikipedia page: "Melanie is widely known for the 1971–72 global hit "Brand New Key"; her 1970 version of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday"; her composition "What Have They Done to My Song Ma"; and her 1970 international breakthrough hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", which was inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.[3][4]"

She passed away early this year on January 23 of an unspecified illness.

Aww, I love that old song Brand New Key.

That's kind of how I found out that Laura Branigan had died.
She passed away early in a year and I didn't know about it until I read about it one of the year end people that have passed away lists. :o
Hugs, Jon

My introduction to Melanie came from America's Funniest Home videos where they did a montage of roller skate fails to Brand New Key.

She was a Long Island girl, and my college radio stations was one of the first to play her music. Sorry to hear she's gone - she was a clever songwriter.

I hadn't realized she'd died...never saw the news about it. I remember all her songs with a lot of fondness. Brand New Key is a classic.
