Second death in measles epidemic

Authorities announced that the Texas death was an unvaccinated six y/o. The second death was this week in New Mexico and was an unvaccinated adult who did not seek medical assistance before he passed. He only tested positive for measles after his death, cause of death is being investigated.

Almost 200 cases are reported thus far, 3/4ths of them are age 0-17.

New Mexico has ten cases in Lea County, across the border from Gaines County, Texas, which is the epicenter of the plague. Authorities are having to discourage people from having measles parties to purposely infect their kids to "build immunity". They're also having a rush on cod livercastor oil, which is high in vitamin A which is believed to be protective against measles. Hint: it isn't. Only the vaccine is protective against it.

Unfortunately I don't have a cite for this, but the religious group that's dominant in the area that's resisting vaccination based on their faith? THEY ARE GOING AGAINST THEIR LEADERS. Their leaders published a doctrinal whateverwhosit stating that it is proper and good to take the Covid-19 vaccinations, and all vaccinations to be good citizens in the community and to keep themselves safe. So they're going against their religious leaders in refusing to get vaccinated!

Oh, and Robert Fucking Kennedy Junior Mint? He's off rock climbing in California. And recommending that vitamins and supplements are very effective. And cancelling vaccine advisory meetings and scrubbing information off the CDC web site.

He’s pushing cod liver oil. The first time I heard of cod liver oil was in an Our Gang short from the ‘30s where they’d give huge spoonfuls to the kids as medicine, and punishment.

I was talking about something similar last night. My friend was saying how he had been seeing more and more of his acquaintances getting radicalised. These people started off nice enough but became anti-vax. From there, they became radicalised to the far right.
To me, no one with critical thinking skills would embrace the far right (the leopards eating people's faces party). Anti-vax is a litmus test. If you are stupid enough to fall for it, you are ripe to be plucked as a stupid goon desperate to have your face eaten off by a leopard.

My brother is a weird example, he's semi-anti-vax. He wouldn't get the Covid jab, and as far as I know has never had it, because "he read a paper from the Salk Institute that the Covid vaccine..." and this is where my clear recollection fails. I think his objection was that 'Covid targets the lungs, and the vaccine doesn't', or it might have been the other way around. But it was right along those lines. I couldn't convince him that an infection like Covid is systemic and affects the whole body, and it may or may not heavily present in the lungs. Basically his education and comprehension makes his ability to read and accurately comprehend a review paper presented by someone like the Salk Institute a very dubious proposition at best. I'm sure he was probably reading someone's "analysis" of the Salk paper and just agreeing with their conclusions.

I think part of the basic problem is the increasing failure of community. These anti-vax people don't understand that a virus ignores borders, and weakened community response means a lot more severe illnesses, lingering disability, and potential deaths. In the case of Covid, I lost a cousin to it during the first wave: he was in the hospital expected to be discharged, got up to go to the bathroom and collapsed. Complete renal failure that they hadn't noticed, he was dead the next day.

So much for my brother's "vaccine not targeting the lungs" issue.

While I don't have a lot of positive things to say about my brother, he can be a very smart and I'll bet he has a high IQ, creative person. But he's not well-educated, which drives me nuts. He could have been so much more, but instead he prioritized watching TV and hanging with his friends. I also suspect he's a bit dyslexic but he's never been tested, and as he's almost 66, that's never going to happen and he's never going to change.

Not good, and especially not good when there's a mentality there to fight what's a good idea. Ugh. I wish there were some way of sense finding itself for these folks, but that's often difficult.
