Yeah, go ahead and ask me what roleplaying games that I can name!

I belong to two survey services, a few times I week I'll receive an email about something they want to ask me about. One of them awards points that you can cash in on stuff, the other enters you into drawings that generally are awarded as Amazon gift cards. I've received at least four cards from the latter.

Well, tonight I get home and there's a survey waiting for me. They asked me what roleplaying games I could name. HAH!

Here's what I came up with. The sad things that I've probably played over half of them.
Champions, Deadlands, Heroic Fantasy, Call of Cthulhu, Pendragon, GURPs, FUDGE, AD&D, Spycraft, Judge Dredd, Dr. Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, Bushido, PSIWorld, Land of the Rising Sun, Chivalry & Sorcery, Furry Pirates, Albedo, the d20 System et al, Hackmaster, DC Heroes, Marvel Superheroes, Villains & Vigilantes, Vampire: The Masquerade, Wraith, Werewolf, TORG, Tunnels & Trolls, Mercenaries Spies and Private Eyes, Middle Earth Roleplaying Game, Harn, Tekumel, Runequest, Ringworld, Mutants & Masterminds, Twilight: 2000, Traveller, 7th Sea, Amber Diceless RPG, Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG, Angel RPG, Firefly RPG, Babylon 5 RPG, Farscape RPG, Stargate RPG, In Nominae, Space Opera, Battletech, Robotech RPG, Ninjas & Masterminds, Elf Quest, Legend of the Five Rings, Warhammer, Paranoia, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, Chill, Toon, Teenagers From Outer Space, Kobolds Ate My Baby, Star Ace, Top Secret, Gamma World, Boot Hill

Turns out the quiz was for AD&D 3.5. Apparently WotC was looking for some marketing info. I told them that I played it but no longer do, but that was long before WotC existed. I'd love to see the face of the marketing wank who reads my survey response and sees all these games listed! It'll also be interesting to see what other games people list. (hint, hint)

Heroic Fantasy was a computer moderated PBM game; technically it's a RPG, but PC games as well as videogames use a slightly different definition of RPG than the others you listed. I'm not aware of a tabletop RPG using that title, and I'm sure that Herr Loomis would have known if there were.

Furry Pirates and Harn were both role-playing supplements IIRC; neither one contained an actual role-playing game system.

The RPG for Tekumel was Empire of the Petal Throne. I'm not aware of Prof. Barker releasing it as a game under any other title.

And I didn't want to yank your chain about other systems that you didn't mention (there are far too many), but you got all the other sci-fi media tie-ins except for Serenity. It's not the same as Firefly since the game company didn't have the rights to use any information that came directly from the series but wasn't mentioned in the movie.

I was thinking of Fantasy Hero when I wrote Heroic Fantasy, oh well. And you're right, I couldn't remember EPT, so I wrote Tekumel. I believe the Furry Pirates book that I have is a full game, not a supplement, but I could be mistaken. And I'm not really familiar with Harn, I thought it was a complete game. Actually, I didn't know they'd done a Serenity RPG, makes me wonder what the differences are (not that I'm terribly likely to buy either). Yeah, if I'd done a little more research I could have listed more, but I think it's a pretty good list.

Not a bad list. Working on the gaming converntionn has let me see a lot of titles.

I can add to this list HERO, beSM, Spycraft, and there's a Kung-fu movie-style RPG whose name escapes me right now. off the top of my head. If I really wanted to, I could probably go digging in the archives for our at-convention books and list all the titles in there... but you've got a lot of familiar names in it, so you've probably got most of them.

You missed Spycraft on the first line, d00d! If you look in the playtest names on the core rulebook, you'll see Wayne West there. I did EXTENSIVE revision of their gun systems, they really sucked in the beta. I forgot BESM, HERO I didn't want to do all of the systems, so I stuck with Champions and Fantasy Hero (intended). In Kung Fu movies there's HKAT and Shadowfist.

I used to work for Flying Buffalo twenty years ago, they made Tunnels & Trolls and Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes. I've been to quite a few gaming conventions, too, including Origins 2001 where I hooked up with the Series Archer folks.

I loved the modern RPG aspect, but then they went all D&D on us with Source Book of the Month Club.

Yep. Missed Spycraft entirely. Hero has a lot of variants, most deifnitely.

As for conventions, only the one that I work, and it's by virtue of being on my college campus, so... yeah.

haven't played 'em

But there are The Black Company (from Glen Cook's novels), Conan now has an RPG, too. And Grim Tales, though that is more of a subsystem than a full-fledged RPG world.

Little Fears. One of my favorite rpgs that never caught on because it mainly concerned tormenting children. ;-)

I believe there's a Ninja Burger rpg, as well as the card game.

role playing games

[identity profile] aerynn-sun.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
People will say this is a card game and yes it is. You use the cards for you stats and powers etc.. but one still had to role play your characters. I bought the system at one Comic Con and played it there. It is called, "Dragon Storm".
