The American Iron Chef has a live audience, but the camera rarely shows them. One of the exceptions was when Bill Murray was there, rooting for the challenger.
And yes, I agree that the original Japanese show was superior, but it isn't being produced any more. At least the American version was much improved from the first attempt; if you think the current chairman is a detriment, you should have seen William Shatner mugging for the camera as the chairman.
I remember well when Shatner was the Chairman. *yech!* I think the live audience was added late in the first season. They're really more of an added thought, whereas the audience in the Japanese version was quite a part of the production.
