The American version is nowhere near as good as the Japanese version, IMHO. Alton is always good to listen to, but I really don't know what's missing. I think there are two differences, at least for me: (a) lack of a live audience and (b) Alton doing all the work. I think the tag team of Hattori and Fukui really added to the flavor of the import, and having the guest foodies throwing in the 0.02 yen worth also added to it.
I can take or leave the "Chairman's nephew", he doesn't do anything for me one way or another.
The American Iron Chef has a live audience, but the camera rarely shows them. One of the exceptions was when Bill Murray was there, rooting for the challenger.
And yes, I agree that the original Japanese show was superior, but it isn't being produced any more. At least the American version was much improved from the first attempt; if you think the current chairman is a detriment, you should have seen William Shatner mugging for the camera as the chairman.
I remember well when Shatner was the Chairman. *yech!* I think the live audience was added late in the first season. They're really more of an added thought, whereas the audience in the Japanese version was quite a part of the production.
