Yet again, Bruce Schneier's security blog shines light on the darkness. He explains what is involved in making liquid explosives like what the terrorists were planning on using.

Interesting stuff, and very difficult to smuggle. I'm not a chemistry expert, but this is nasty shite.

The issue is that with a pressurized aircraft it really doesnt take a whole lot to cause something catastrophic. Aluminum skin and 20,000 lbs of fuel do not mix well with bombs. they might need chemical sniffers or cavity searches. I think I will drive thanks.

What amuses me is the suppositions based on what the media are reporting. I got my degree in broadcast studies, and I know for a fact how many thoroughly unknowledgeable people there are in the business. Somehow, I don't think that they'll have their facts straight for the most part, because the vast majority of them will be in unknown territory.

As a complete tangent, I'm reminded of one assignment for a video class where we had to create a news-style segment on something on the campus. My group (of three) decided to do a story on the theater ghost, and I wasn't able to go with them for some reason to get footage. So they came back with some amazing footage, and I was simply appalled, because what they'd done was go to a meeting of the college improv group and say, "Anyone who wants to tell us stories of the theater ghost is welcome."

In improv, that is what is known as a suggestion. On the other hand, our segment was highly entertaining...
