SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS
The continuing saga of Matrix vs Rock.
It was initially inspected by the Toyota dealership to be about a $1600 repair. Insurance adjuster came out and spec'd replacing another part, kicking up the repair to $3k. Part came in, we were supposed to pick it up today.
Just got a call from the dealership. The transmission is toast.
I thought I saw a lot of purple when it was draining its life fluids after I got off the road, but some oils look purple.
So it will add at least another week to the repair. I don't expect to see my car until after Christmas.
Still, we're only out our $250 insurance deductible. We're just also out an awful lot of convenience.
EDIT: went by the dealership to get some stuff out of the car that we'll need for the trip (power inverter, etc.). Found out the tranny will run $3200. So that'll take the total repair up over $6k.

boggles at your odd obsession with that town

It isn't Phoenix per se, it's just that so many of my friends and relatives are there. Not to mention book stores, movie theatres, good restaurants, good places to shop, camera stores.... ;-)
We go to Las Cruces and El Paso regularly for the same thing. They don't have the friends or camera stores, otherwise they're good.
Alamogordo is the pits. One or two restaurants that I would call good, a five-plex movie theatre that misses an awful lot of films, and no really good book stores (a'la Bookman's).

Hopefully it can get done fairly soon and will be working OK once you get it back.
