Tuesday an attempt is going to be made to establish a rather peculiar world record

and you can participate, regardless of where you are in the world.

Mozilla is going to be releasing Firefox 3.0, and they're going to try to set a world record for the most bytes downloaded for a single program in a single day. Myself, I'll download it, but I'll probably wait a couple of weeks to install it to give them time to discover any really big showstopper bugs that might have escaped the beta process.

You can pledge at http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/, I'm actually going to download it twice, maybe three times: my Mac laptop, my PC at work, and perhaps my Thinkpad.

What an awesome way for a hacker to spread a virus; stage some silly "most downloads evah" event.

As someone who has had their beta installed on my machine without realizing it until far too late - it's decently stable, but it does have a crash tendency so far for me. So I'd say waiting on it is good.

How on earth did you end up with a beta installed in your machine?!

The maintainers of Ubuntu decided that Beta 5 (right before an RC) was stable enough to include as the production version in their latest system upgrade. I don't like that decision, but I didn't realize it until after I'd done the upgrade.

Huh. I'd call that a bad decision on their part, but that's their decision I guess.
