I need to search your collective science fiction literature hive mind

There is a Roger Zelazny story or book about a guy who had an inheritance that continued as long as he was in college, but ended when he graduated. He changed his major every time that he was on the cusp of graduating, thus perpetuating his student status. Eventually the college tired of him because he was better educated than all of the instructors so they crafted a degree to kick him out.

Does anyone recall this? For some reason an Alan Dean Foster bell started ringing as I typed this.

Doorways in the Sand. That's also the one he wrote backwards, with each chapter starting at the end and the rest of the chapter explaining how he got there.

Go ahead and read it. It's one of my favotite Zelazny novels.
