Republicans push nuclear energy citing the French

Surrender monkeys! Freedom power!

Sorry, feeling weird. (like, and that's unusual?)

There are two characteristics of the French nuclear model that are great. First, they have standardized designs, every plant in France is based on one of three designs. This makes them less expensive to construct and gives workers better job portability by minimizing job retraining. That's good. They also have an active reprocessing program, so they don't have as much waste. And they have stricter environmental controls. Double plus good.

And get this: they built 56 plants in 15 years. We can't build one in 15 years it seems.

Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_France

I think if they followed the French model rather than let every single frickin' plant be independently designed, this could be good. But if they're stupid and let every single installation be totally different, well, it'd be great for the companies that design/make them and such for everyone else.

I don't know how really serious they are about it. Mostly because it seems to be "well, we'll embrace nuclear so we don't have to subsidize real renewables", and once any enthusiasm about renewables dies down, they'll revert to "drill, baby, drill" because nuke power will then be the fringe left.

That's my feeling. They'll support it and drag their feet until another administration comes in that favors drilling.

And then they'll drill and realize, "oh, hey. We still don't have enough to be self-sufficient, and we wrecked all that nice land, too. Oh, well, bring on the End Times!"

Amen, brother! ;-)
