Doonesbury Say What?

"We have a lot of kids graduating college, can't find jobs. That's what happened in Cairo. That's what happened in Madrid. You don't want those kinds of riots here."
— NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Not quite the same situation, Mike, but it's a good thing to keep in mind.

Right idea, Mayor, but you and others could possibly avoid that situation if you convinced your corporate friends to hire some of those graduates.

The problem is that, as they say in the press, we've had a jobless recovery. Employers have learned that they can downsize staff and still make a good profit by working said employees harder under the threat of them losing their job, so there's little incentive to increase hiring since it will also increase payroll costs in areas such as health care and pension contributions (LOL!). So as you say, the corporations need to hire, but they won't. This is part of the problem of off-shoring manufacturing, making goods requires people to be employed.

But I blather. Bloomberg ain't worth it.

And too bad that we don't have a government that will say, hire people to do the kinds of work nobody does in full employment but that is necessary for maintaining the infrastructure?

Nah, infrastructure requires big investment to big corporations! Can't have that!
