Good ol' Mitt

"Our esteem around the world has fallen. I can't think of a major country, it's hard to think of a single country that has greater respect and admiration for America today than it did five years ago when Barack Obama became president. And that's a very sad, unfortunate state of affairs."

-- Mitt Romney, earlier this year, making an assertion that is contradicted by Pew Global Attitude Project polls in 2006 and 2014 regarding confidence in the U.S. president to do the right thing regarding world affairs: the only two countries where confidence in Bush was stronger than confidence in Obama were Russia and Pakistan.

I saw a breakdown of this lie and of some of the lies he told during his presidential run. Basically, he's very good at doubling-down on lies even when they've been rigorously disproved.

Sounds to me like he's considering running again in '16.

After Bush, there was nowhere to go but up.

I find it entertaining how often the American politicians who care/know the least about the opinions of other countries try to use international opinion to criticise Obama.

I think there's a disconnect among a lot of politicians where they think that the internet doesn't apply to them, and that people don't fact-check. Or maybe that fact checking is their, or their party's, exclusive purview.

I'm not a huge fan of Obama, IMO there's a lot more good that he could have done, but I cannot imagine what state the country would be in if McCain or Romney had been elected.

I don't like Obama, but I admire his stamina and grace in the face of jaw dropping levels of racism, childishness, obstructionism, and a word that means unprofessionalism times a thousand. (And treason, as far as I'm concerned.) I think many others would have just chucked it in or had a stroke.

John McCain made no impression on me besides being a Republican, which George Bush had taught me meant vicious, and having the extremely bad judgment to choose an obviously ignorant, stupid, and dishonourable person as a running mate.

I don't believe Romney can recognise that human beings are actual human beings and not cut-outs for him to torment at pleasure. I don't believe he can recognise when he makes mistakes or take responsibility for them. While he might be able to brush off his disastrous three-country tour, everyone else remembers. Other world leaders wouldn't respect him, they would just recognise they had to deal with him while trying to maintain as great a distance as possible. Except Harper, Harper liked him, but Harper is a loser.

In that respect (doubling down on lies), Mitt Romney is definitely a Republican. If he runs again, it will be because the moneyed interests desperately want a candidate like them, instead of the one that appeals to the racists and the other one that appeals to the religious conservatives.
