Apple AirTag locations can now be directly shared with United Airlines

Now, at least with United and partner airlines like Lufthansa, there's one less excuse if your bags get lost. Tell your phone to share the location with the airlines - and the link expires 7 days later - and theoretically you'll be reunited with your bag sooner!

This does require iOS 18.2 and at least an iPhone 10.

I have been fortunate in my travels in that I've never lost my bag, but in my latest trip to DC I bought a lovely new Away case and planted two AirTags in it: one is obvious and easily found, the other is taped directly to the case inside the liner. And I shared both of them with my wife, so if something happens to me, she can find my luggage, too!

I would probably want to get that for an international trip, not sure about in the states though. But it really is the smart thing to do!

As I was typing that I wondered. Maybe just a good idea anywhere one goes!

There’s loss of a bag in transit between airlines, which happens more with international flights. But then there’s loss of a bag when it arrives safely at the same airline as you, and then some rando snatches it off the carousel before you do, plunders it, then dumps it in a street nearby.

I’ve had the first happen to me, and it took a lot of legwork to track down the item. The AirTags I put in the container were instrumental. I haven’t had the second happen to me, but I have seen it happen quite a few times to others in my home city.

I don't have the requisite Apple economy to take advantage of this, but I do like the idea of being able to share data with a company to help them find something they should not have lost in the first place.
