Doonesbury Say What

"We cannot allow the pen to be mightier than the sword."
-- teabagger Steve Lonagan

Uh, yeah. Got brains? As it happens, we saw the clip of this guy saying it. Talk about a "Whaa?" moment!

This is typical teabagger for me; I haven't the slightest idea what it's supposed to mean.

Whether the guy is conscious of it or not, the guy is advocating violent revolution over reasoned debate, not that we have much of the latter right now.

I'm not a fan of violent revolution because it would kill me and my wife. She has severe asthma, and any epidemic could kill her. Me, it would interrupt my supply of Vivaglobin, and then subsequent epidemics would kill me.

Here's the thing that I don't get. From what I understand, Obama is wanting to roll back the tax cuts that Bush put in place over the preceding eight years. Those tax cuts did not significantly affect me and my wife, and at that time we had a combined income of over $100k. So the only people affected by the "tax hike" are those making over $250k, which is a pretty small percentage of the country. If Bush had lowered taxes across the board, that would be one thing. But he didn't.

It's Fox-fueled radicalism, people getting to shout and scream their indignation without thinking.

I'm not sure the teabaggers even know what they mean. I think they just shout loud, angry things that sound good to them.

Yeah, and what's that sword going to look like when someone turns it on you, teabagger? Bet you'll like that pen a whole lot more.

Someone has an LJ icon, or perhaps it's a Slashdot sig, that says: "If the pen is mightier than the sword, and a picture is worth a thousand words, is a camera a weapon of mass destruction?"

Based on how you can be arrested for taking pictures and brought on terror-like charges, I'd say the answer is yes.

Yeah, it's amazing how many photographs are routinely stopped and hassled when out taking shots. I did a lot of shooting of railroad tracks four years ago, it's really a wonder I didn't get interviewed.

People don't think of rail as essential infrastructure here, despite the fact that cargo rail definitely is, and passenger rail still moves people for inexpensively, if slower compared to airplanes.

Cost per pound, when calculated for multi-ton loads, is much more inexepensive on rail. They're also talking about building monster airships for moving rail-sized loads for less money. It'll be interesting to see if they pull it off: large loads without the rail maintenance infrastructure costs.

That would be interesting. Although I wonder whether the costs of airship fuel would be just as expensive. Are we thinking dirigibles or jet engines?

[identity profile] thewayne.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Dirigibles. Their speed would be a bit slower than trains, but they'd be traveling in more or less straight lines. So I'm assuming they could use standard diesel.

Probably so. And they don't have to run on rails, so they can be pointed in the direction and route that will move fastest for them. This is a very neat idea. Anyone willing to finance a fleet to see if they can turn a profit on it?
