Now I'm curious -- what was it that you originally saw as the moral problem of the film?

Calling it a "rape storyline" is really over-simplifying to some extent. But if you stop forcing the viewer to see it thru the rose-colored glasses of romance, what happens is: Unexplained malfunction wakes up cold-sleep passenger guy. He gets lonely and fixates on female passenger, obsesses over her, and eventually wakes her up so he'll have a place to park his dick -- effectively condemning her to death in the process. He LIES to her about why she's awake in order to coax her into having sex with him. When he finally does "confess" and she understandably goes ballistic, he stalks her all over the spaceship. And eventually she succumbs to Stockholm Syndrome and gives him what he wants. It's not rape by force, but it is rape by deception, and throughout the whole thing it's painfully obvious that HER consent isn't something to be considered; she's not even a real person, she's just there to be a plot point and provide fanservice and be a Bad Conduct Prize for the protagonist.

I can't even think about this movie without getting earwormed by Joe Haldeman's "Locked Up In a Spaceship Blues"...

"Now I'm locked up in a spaceship with five hundred frozen pieces of ass,
All under twenty-five, all pretty, 'cause that's all the Company would pass.
And I feel like such a lout -- I don't know how to thaw one out!
I've got those locked up in a spaceship for a year without no women blues."

(Yes, the song is offensive. It was written to be as offensive as possible, some 20-odd years ago when the bar was much higher. Not to mention that it neatly highlights the other gigantic plot hole in this movie -- no such ship would ever be sent out without a human crew to handle emergencies, or more likely in this case, 2 or 3 crew complements who would rotate every few years.)
