The term Camera Body is OLD. It certainly goes back to the interchangeable lens, I don't know if it goes back to the view camera which usually also had a changeable lens that was mounted on a removable board called, cleverly enough, a lens board or lens mount. Initially camera lenses were more commonly permanently mounted on the camera, then Honeywell/Pentax (IIRC) developed a standardized screw-mount lens that lots of lens makers adopted, it's still used for lots of telescope mounts. Now every maker has their own proprietary mount, though lens makers like Sigma, Tamron, etc. will design one lens and make it with multiple different mounts so you can get one for any major camera made. The lens doesn't have a changeable mount, heaven forfend! That would deprive the lens maker of profit, and would encourage brand disloyalty for the camera maker!

It's rare, but not unusual, for bodies to be sold without lenses. The lens bundled with the body is commonly called a kit lens, and when you're dealing with a camera like a Canon Digital Rebel, the kit lens is usually of inferior quality (but still quite acceptable. People who already have a lot of glass in their collection usually skip the kit lens and save a few bucks or get something else and insist on a discount on the other lens.

I don't think current cameras as we know them will be fading in to the archives any time soon. CP commented on LJ that it's possible that they made fade a bit in favor of smaller mirrorless cameras that still support changeable lenses. Possible, I'm not sure. Time will tell, I just hope that the time is outside of my lifetime. ;-)
