He was on his third cancer, this time pancreatic. They couldn't attack that one directly due to his age and his bone marrow being largely exhausted from his second cancer, leukemia.
My parents were married for 65 years and lived in the same house in Phoenix for my entire life, moving there in '58 or '59. Now it'll be sold and gone. There's no one left in the neighborhood that I know on a first-name basis, they've all died and the kids - my contemporaries - moved away.
Russet and I were in town two weeks ago for the wedding of my middle niece, she had a ceremony at the Phoenix Zoo. She's a wedding coordinator, I expect she got a good rate. He just wasn't up to attending, so I streamed it via FaceTime to my iPad, Russet stayed home and helped him watch it. My sister took some of my mom's ashes, so she was there symbolically.
Tuesday after work, my brother called to say Dad wasn't going to last long. I got ahold of my boss and told her that the situation had become critical, and did a proverbial midnight run to Phoenix, about a 500 mile drive, getting there about 6am.
Two of his three grandchildren were here last night, we were telling stories of misdeeds and laughing by his bedside and saying our goodbyes.
I hope it brought him some peace.
He had one brother who was killed in a base accident on Guadalcanal during World War 2, four sisters who passed over the last decade or so, and one sister surviving.

So the "essence" or "soul" or "personality" of the departed still exists, somewhere in the universe. Maybe the moment when the sleet stops and the roads are drivable again is a gift from him in some way.
