The problem is that on Google forums, Google has locked the threads where people are questioning whether or not the fix works! If you can't discuss it with other people outside of the Google hive mind, how do you know whether it actually works in the wild?
One solution involves a previously unknown hidden menu in the Google desktop app. And initial feedback, before the forums were locked, were not encouraging. Another suggested recover path involved command line invocations, again, not many people reporting success.
And Google has locked the message forums for this. Are they washing their hands of the problem? Which kind of implies they know they have a catastrophic loss problem, meaning no way to recover people's data? This could lead to lawsuits as Google Drive is also sold as a commercial product that businesses rely upon, and it could literally destroy a business if its data is lost!

Date: 2023-12-19 03:15 am (UTC)While I don't know if they have any government contracts for Drive (probably do), and I don't know this for a fact (conjecture on my part), I would expect any gov't contracts have a different level of support/service and may not have been affected by whatever happened. Again, pure conjecture on my part. I haven't heard of any Federal agencies being affected by this as the Feds probably have a more specifically-contracted cloud service with very tight security and backup protocols dictated. Something like a small town contract? Dunno.

Date: 2023-12-19 07:00 pm (UTC)If you remember years ago, Google announced their first corporate mantra as "Don't be evil". It was the height of hypocrisy. And since then they've proven themselves to be anything but. They are a corporation who has one purpose: serve up advertising, and siphon off as much information on their customers as possible in the service of their primary goal. They will try to sweep this under the rug, telling people that weren't paying that they should have kept backups of their personal data. For paying customers, they might put more effort into it, we shall see how the story develops.
