Today was originally the last day of the Arizona Renaissance Festival, they added an additional weekend due to all of the rain that we’ve been getting of late. Russet had scheduled to come down so that we could go today. Saturday would’ve been nice, but my class on network wiring/installation started yesterday.
We’ve been talking about getting married and it’s become a higher priority subject of late due to her father’s terminal illness. Last year we discussed what our “dream wedding” would be, and it would’ve been quite nice: up in the mountains around Cloudcroft, small wedding with a friend of mine officiating, probably only a dozen people or so, certainly less than 20.
Well, that ain’t how it’s gonna be.
The date will be June 4th, the location somewhere in Ohio (near where her parents live in Oberlin(?)). We didn’t want to jeopardize her father further with needing him to travel, much less exposing him to 9000’.
As for the details to my proposing, a lot of it was winged. Originally I was planning on proposing when we were having dinner at George & Dragon (a British pub/restaurant). We were at the Ren Fest and spent a good amount of time looking at a very good jeweler’s wares then wandered on. He had some wonderful rings for the bride, I didn’t see anything that appealed for me.
Eventually we ended up at the people from whom I bought our puzzle rings last year. They have some very nice puzzle rings that include stone settings of quite a variety of stones and sizes. We found a very nice group of rings that were four ring puzzles, each band is a different metal and color. My ring is very similar to my previous silver ring, no stone. Russet’s ring is obviously much smaller, also a four color band, and has an sapphire, hers has to be shipped and mine I wore out. I’m going to wear it for a few days to confirm the size, if it’s not quite right I’ll go back to the Ren Fest next weekend and exchange it.
The guy was also nice enough to polish up last year’s ring for me. Good people. I’ll be posting web info on them later, they’re really good quality people.
ANYWAY, we found what we liked, we sized them, all that remained was to write-up the paperwork. We took a break and left the shop to discuss it, I spotted a bench in the shade so we sat down. We discussed the rings, I wasn’t too put off on the price (just over $1,000) but I was put off at my present situation. I’ve been working less than two months and I have a tonne of bills to pay off, not to mention shunting money to my parents for their having supported me for most of four years. We discussed these and decided to write everything up and order them closer to our intended date.
Then I told Russ that there was one thing that I really needed to do. So I took her hands, got down on bended knee, and asked her to marry me. She accepted with a smile on her face, there was much kissage. We went back and decided to go ahead and buy the rings outright, thus getting a nice little discount.
Currently, in June, Russ has to be back to work on 6/13 (she has most of May off), so we won’t have a lot of time for a honeymoon. We may do DragonCon in September, but that might cause scheduling conflicts with the telescope/observatory coming out of shutdown, so we might do Origins in Columbus end of June/early July. Who knows, we certainly don’t!
ANYWAY, since it’s going to be impractical to invite a lot of people to Ohio for the wedding, we’re planning on having a big reception/party in the Fall in Phoenix, date and other parameters yet to be determined.
Yes, we are happy and grinning like idiots. It’s going to really suck not being able to live together for a few months after getting married, but that’s the way it is right now with my work and school. I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to move to Cloudcroft, but with her long blocks of time off, she’ll be able to drive down when it cools down and I’ll be able to occasionally fly over, apparently you can do Phoenix to El Paso for under $100.
So there you have it. At age 43, I’m getting married. So, Apostate, does this count as another sign of the apocalypse?
