I am now an apartment dweller!

It's ahead of schedule, but my parents helped out when they were in town to make it possible. I now have a two-bedroom apartment about two blocks from the university and pretty much the same distance to work as from my aunt's.

It seems to be a decent place, let's hope that impression continues!

It's really kind of weird: I have NEVER lived in an apartment! I've had three previous addresses in my life, this is now number four. It just isn't viable for me to commute to Cloudcroft, nor is it practical for my EVER SO FINE AND NOT TO BE SUFFICIENTLY PRAISED wife to commute to the observatory. So here I dwell in a largely-bare apartment. I'll be hauling stuff down when I come back to 'Cruces on Sundays, and she'll bring stuff down when she has time off and is sufficiently rested.

One fairly spiffy thing about the apartment: pervasive WiFi throughout the complex! I'll still be getting a high-speed connection installed, but that'll probably be next check or the one after (and BOY! do I have a story about that, but it's going to have to wait).

But there is an Ultra-Spiffy thing here -- I HAVE A NEW LAPTOP! Even as we speak, so to speak, I'm using a brand new Apple MacBook! It has a gig of ram and a DuoCore Centrino CPU ticking away at 2 GHz. I've fully patched the system, and again, even as we speak, it is industriously copying over my music library from my old Thinkpad which is seemingly becoming more decrepit by the day. I have a couple more directories to copy over, and then I can think about reformatting it and putting it up on eBay to see if anyone is intersted in some space parts.

Tonight after work, I packed everything that I had at my aunt's, then hit Target. Pretty much finished the initial equippage of the apartment, or at least pretty much as equipped as it's going to be for now. I do need to pick up a couple more hand towels, but I've got some at home in Cloudcroft, and they can wait for the weekend. As I was checking out, I pulled a couple of gift cards out of my wallet from our wedding almost two years ago, so that saved some bucks. I then realized/remembered that I had some Best Buy gift cards that I'd gotten through completing some online surveys, so I put back two DVDs that I was going to get (Robot Chicken collection and a double-pack of Get Shorty/Stay Cool). Best Buy is on the way to the apartment, so I stop there and start cruising the racks for Robot Chicken. I didn't find RC, but I found something that I've been wanting for ages and didn't know was out: THE COMPLETE RUN OF POLICE SQUAD! It's the really hoaky police comedy starring Leslie Nielson that later spun off to the Naked Gun movies. They only did six episodes, and with the gift cards, I didn't pay anything for it!

So tonight was pretty cool.

ANYWAY, hopefully I'll be back to blogging more regularly whilst I learn new stuff about my Mac. This weekend I'm installing Parallels and Windows XP! Definitely should be interesting...
