I have been without my MacBook Pro for over a week, fortunately we have a spare that is no where near as good, but at least I can work with it.
When we were in Phoenix a few weeks ago, I took my laptop to a Mac dealer to get the hard drive upgraded. They installed a 500 gig and copied my 160 to it. They had problems and weren't able to straight clone it, that should have been my first warning. I began noticing occasional system pauses: my computer would actually freeze for a few seconds, it got worse until it would sometimes pause for a full minute.
December 26 I decide to run YASU, Yet Another System Utility, that flushes all the cashes on a Mac, I figured it couldn't hurt.
It wouldn't even run.
I opened the Disk Utilities that come with the system, and they report S.M.A.R.T. status as failing. I really should have done that while we were still in Phoenix, it might have saved me a LOT of blood pressure.
So my new drive has a hardware problem and is going to die.
I couldn't get ahold of the computer store on the 26th, and on the 27th the store in Scottsdale was closed, but I could talk to a guy in Peoria and he tells me to ship it back. By this time it's too late to get it out Saturday. I download a utility that will back up the drive to an external drive and make a bootable image. It takes at least 7 hours to run.
Monday I ship it off to Scottsdale, at a cost of $140 out of pocket, I used UPS because they were significantly less than FedEx. They get it Tuesday, but they don't get it done and don't ship until Wednesday. I just knew I'd get screwed by New Years, and sure enough it happened. They were going to ship it normal speed, which would mean today at the earliest is when it would get here. I split the charges for them to get it to me next day, and it storms the 30th and 31st, and FedEx doesn't deliver it.
Well, New Year's day, FedEx is closed, and not only do they not deliver on Saturday, they don't have a depot in Alamogordo like UPS does, so it goes back to El Paso.
Except it doesn't stop there! It actually goes all the way back to Memphis! THEN it went back to Memphis and put on a truck to bring it back up the mountain for delivery today.
EXCEPT THEY DON'T EFFING DELIVER IT TODAY!
Even though it hasn't snowed in over 4 days, even though I drove down to Alamogordo yesterday and the roads were fine, THEY DIDN'T DELIVER IT.
"Conditions out of our control."
SO MAYBE I'll get it tomorrow, MAYBE not. Regardless there are things that I needed to be doing in Alamogordo that I couldn't do today because they were supposed to deliver the blasted thing, and now I can't do them tomorrow either because I have to wait again.
I really should have gone with my first thought and that was to simply drive back to Phoenix and take care of it myself. It would have cost the same out of pocket in gas as it did in shipping.
