"I don't know. It's a question I've never even thought about."
—abortion foe Ohio state Sen. Jim Buchy, asked by a reporter, "What do you think makes a woman want to have an abortion?"

I never thought about a specific angle in the pro-/anti-abortion debate, and that is that it's about controlling women, trying to assure male supremacy. It's usually cast in religious overtones, frequently the 'every life is sacred' note, and at the same time they also frequently support capitol punishment and ignore the contradiction by slicing and dicing the parts of the bible that they like. So here's yet another politician who doesn't have a reasoned argument to support a position, which, I guess, makes him a politician.

And here's a short list for the Senator of some reasons why women want abortions:
  • They can't afford to raise the child well and government won't help much if at all

  • They'll be a single parent and won't have the support of the father or family and government won't help much

  • They're too young to raise a child and government won't help much

  • Carrying the child to term or delivering it would be injurious or fatal to the mother

  • The child was conceived through rape or incest
