On one hand, I'm glad these idiots are getting caught. On the other, it's sad to see someone's life wrecked because of bad decisions made before their brain was fully developed. I agree with the article that their ability to do such things could be reflective of a lack of strong and positive parental involvement and supervision in their life.
SWATing is using caller ID to spoof someone else's phone number, then calling the police to report a particularly nasty crime that will result in the SWAT team being deployed and your door being kicked in. Innocent people have been killed in SWAT raids, I'm not sure if SWATing has resulted in any deaths. In this case, the teen made the mistake of trying to SWAT Brian Krebs, who has previously been SWATed and the local police know this: they called his house to make sure everything was OK before deploying, so nothing happened.
It is estimated by the FBI that a successful SWATing costs the local PD $10,000 to deploy, it also removes emergency services from deploying to actual emergencies. The kid is facing 60 charges.
