His gang was responsible for calling in over 1700(!) threats to schools and universities all over the UK, then later over the USA. They were caught, many of them arrested, and then started getting into the Denial of Service racket. Some of them, including the Idiot In Chief, are likely to face U.S. charges when they finish their UK sentences.
Their ringleader was one of these idiots who also has to taunt victims online, and one of said victims was Brian Krebs, who not only knows how to fight back, but knows how to find people online. During one of their attacks on ProtonMail which coincided with their attack on Krebs, Krebs helped Proton identify the people and shared their findings with the relevant law enforcement.
And naturally, Aspergers and bad childhood family life was used as a defense by his attorneys. It may have been a factor, but it doesn't excuse criminal behavior on this scale and I think a couple of years in prison will be a pretty strong deterrent.
These guys are basically one level below SWATting. They use VOIP, just like the SWATters do, to call in bomb threats to schools to get friends out of class for a few hours. Sometimes they do it for pay.
