Awesome. I've heard that Watterson moved back to the small town he grew up in, and sometimes visits a local bookstore to anonymously sign his books as they're shipped in.
Yeah, he's dropped almost completely dropped off the face of the earth. He sometimes allows indirect interviews where everything goes to his agent. The town he's in is very protective of his privacy.
Considering how much his characters have been used/abused without his permission, I kind of applaud his ability to remain so private.
As do I. And I can hardly blame him. He put so much heart into that strip, and now we have Calvins pissing on Chevy signs and inane crap all over the place. Sigh.
My heart goes out to him (as do some of my dollars on occasion, since I'm always finding more people to buy C&H books for).
I think Watterson stopped doing the signing bit when people started buying them to sell on eBay for high markups (at least, according to an article I read some times ago). He's always been very defensive of exploitation of his characters, so things like the pissing Calvin or people buying his books and then re-selling them just don't jive with his philosophy. The next time we may see anything from him is when someone prints his obituary.
