T minus three days until I’m in Ohio! I’m really looking forward to being with Russet again. She’s been taking a bit of an emotional beating and my being there will help a lot.

Her dad has been exhibiting new impairments, so they did CT scans and confirmed that the cancer is now attacking his brain. He’s doing cortical steroids and will be doing a series of three or four radiation treatments starting today. He’s still kicking butt at Scrabble, but Russ beat him last night. It was a good fight, and then her sister beat up on her for not throwing the game. There ain’t no pleasin’ some people.

I am exceedingly glad that we're doing this now, I'm going to have so little time with him, but this is the only timing that worked without totally screwing my schooling and mauling my new job.

My best man came over last night to pick up something while I was going over the ceremony script and the vows, so I showed them to her. It was nice listening to her sniffle throughout. They’re really good, and I’m quite pleased. Russet met with the minister Monday and the result is great. And she used elements of what I’d written, so I was happy with that.

Suns lost! Bastards. They’ve always had the problem of rarely being able to thoroughly put away an opponent. Sigh. But man, the final two periods of the last game of the previous series! THAT’S the Suns that I remember from the days of KJ, Tom Chambers, Dan Majerle, and one of my fav point guards who name eludes me for the moment (bonus points to who can identify the Python sketch from which the last part of that phrase comes from), he was traded to Utah when Barkley came to town. I know I’ll remember it as soon as I post this.

Got my Bling!Fest auction winning from Mania/Deborak, the most interesting item being a copy of the grammer nazi handbook, Eats Shoots and Leaves. Quite good! Michelle raided my place last night whilst I was getting a haircut, she frequently does that on Tuesdays, her choir is going to San Antonio (hotel on The Riverwalk!) and they meet on Tuesday night four blocks away. She quite enjoyed it, so she’ll probably be the first hand-off when I get home.

1. The Suns lost last night to one of the few teams (maybe the only team) in the NBA that is clearly better than they are. The core of San Antonio (Duncan/Parker/Ginobli) have been together for several years and have experienced the pressures of playing in the playoffs every year. That experience easily offsets the Suns superior athleticism.

2. Joe Johnson is injured and not playing. It's not so much his offense but his defense (especially his ability to keep Manu Ginobli from dominating the game) that is sorely missed. Even if Joe plays this weekend, don't expect a dramatic turnaround since he won't be 100%.

3. How soon the bandwagoners forget. Last season, the Suns won only 29 games and at this time (Memorial Day Weekend) were busy making their plans for the draft as well as the pursuit of free agents (specifically, Steve Nash and Quinton Richardson). When the Suns were enjoying their early season success, I kept stressing that I would be thrilled if the Suns made it to the Western Conference Finals. Anything more would just be gravy for the goose.

4. The guard you are referring to is (I believe) Jeff Hornacek, a former off-guard who also could fill in at the point. He was traded to Philadelphia as part of the deal to bring Charles Barkley here. After one season in Philadelphia, he left for Utah (I believe that he was a free agent, but he could have been traded) where he made a name for himself playing alongside Stockton and Malone.

5. The Suns of today share one of the biggest problems that the Suns that you remember fondly suffered from, which is a lack of a consistent defense. The current Suns, though, have shown signs during the regular season of being capable defensively (they don't have to dominate defensively because their offense is so damn good), but that's something that usually takes time to develop. Hopefully, we'll see more of that next season.

6. There is NO ... rule 6.

Yeah, the last few days before the "big one" are days where time seems to do funny stuff, at least it did to me. I think that's about par for the course...that and expecting Rod Serling to step out from behind a door at any minute, cigarette in hand, speaking his famous line, "Submitted for your approval....."

I'm glad to hear your future father-in-law is still hanging in there. I hope that y'all get some good time together. Quantity would be nice, but if that's not possible then quality is definitely the way to go.

At some point, if you're willing to share, I would be interested in knowing what vows y'all created for each other. If not, I completely understand.

As the next two days are likely to be insane on your end and busier than Hell on mine, I'll go ahead and wish you well now. If I get the chance later, cool, but if not, may it all go smoothly, may y'all be surrounded by love, and may your coming together bring both of you much joy and satisfaction for many, many years to come!

I'll raise a glass in a north-easterly direction on Saturday for yez both....
