silveradept: A kodama with a trombone. The trombone is playing music, even though it is held in a rest position (Default)

Interesting. Having seen that downloadable music is good, but that people still prefer non-DRM'd versions, they're finally thinking about getting rid of the DRM. But this watermarking technique still sounds like "Well, you can have your devices, but we're still going to drive you into the ground if you try to share this music", which is still a violation of First Sale Doctrine. If the music industry simply opened up its catalogue for download, without tricks or hindrances, they'd finally learn just how much downloaded music will make them. And if it turns out that they can't survive on all those sales, then there's something wrong with the business model, or the product. Maybe they can fix that.
