Even though the wives are not voted for, they (including the VP's) are used to advance their hubby's policies. They make foreign appearances, dedicate XYZ, etc. Not entirely unlike the Queen's flock. I remember Bush 2's wife was a librarian before her political life and goes around shilling for literacy and reading programs, which is not a bad thing.
In this case, Ann's an unpaid extra mouth promoting her hubby, so she gets interviews that paid mouths don't have time for or access to. You wouldn't find a male shill on an all-woman morning show, where you might be able to slide Ann in to.
It could be interesting to see what White House wives have done over the years, both pre- and post-election.
