I don't think he stood much of a chance getting the nomination, but there was also a grimmer reason behind it: his daughter has a fairly rare genetic disorder called Trisomy 18, or Edwards Syndrome. He spent Easter weekend with her in the hospital then Tuesday announced his dropping the campaign.
It's a pretty grim condition, as most genetic problems are. Half the infants do not survive beyond the first week of life, median life span is 5-15 days and only 1% make it to age 10.
To drop the race because you don't stand a chance is one thing, to drop it because your daughter is probably doomed is quite another and very sad.
