The NRA has long been past the point out sensible gun ownership. Them they are busy poisoning the well for everyone else who wants to have a discussion about reasonable gun ownership. There aren't really databases or things implemented federally that would make it easy to track someone who shouldn't be purchasing guns.
And some store owners don't do background checks. And there are always gum shows somewhere to but from that don't require the background checks, either. For as much as we want to not have gun violence, we don't make it particularly hard for people to buy guns and ammunition.
