Thus far I haven't had any corruption issues, knock on vinyl-looking wood covering. We caught my wife's HD when it started making noise and doing retries, I ran diagnostics and found the SMART status to be failing. Immediately refreshed the backup and all was well. Her laptop is rather static, the main thing that changes are the stories that she writes and music downloads, which can be re-downloaded. I think she emails stories to herself as a backup.
I've done system restores twice, once when I went from a MacBook Pro to my 27" iMac and when I acquired my Air. I might be upgrading my wife to a 1 TB drive in the not distant future, which will require a full restore, and I'd like to get another 15" Pro. I'm finding living with 4 gig of RAM and a 256 gig drive too limiting.
My main problem encountered isn't with TimeMachine, it's with the drives failing. In my experience, external HDs are only good for a max of about 3 years.
