Captain Crunch, also known as John Draper, made an interesting discovery in the early '70s: the toy whistle prize in a box of Captain Crunch cereal emitted a tone of 2600 hertz. And that was the control frequency of the Bell telephone switching network. If you knew what you were doing, you could control the network and make long-distance calls for free. And he did. He called President Nixon at the White House on an emergency circuit and told him that the west coast was out of toilet paper. He also managhed to call the Kremlin, but I don't know what he talked to them about.

Well, John is now Kickstarting his autobiography. And he has some pretty amazing bonuses if you have the bucks to pay for them, including replica Blue Boxes. $15 will get you a PDF of the book, I'm hoping that they'll expand the pledge and also offer it as an epub/mobi.

Cool! Glad to hear he's apparently doing okay.
