First off, this was made by Brian Henson with genuine Muppets. All look familiar, none are particularly similar to anything seen on Sesame Street. And like Team America World Police had marionette sex, Happytime has not only puppet sex, but puppet porn. And great stuff with a strip club with mixed species.

Next, this is one raunchy movie. DO NOT take your kids to this film! You are a Grade A Idiot if you do! Very offensive material within.

It was a lot of fun. I honestly wasn't interested in seeing it, that was purely based on seeing the poster. I really enjoy Melissa McCarthy, but that wasn't enough for me. Then this afternoon I watched the trailer, and we saw it this evening. I'm very glad that we did. And the bloopers in the end credits were wonderful!

On to the discussion.

Afterwards wife and I went for burgers. She was trying to remember a movie about an underclass that we'd seen within the last few years, I pulled up my movie list of things that I'd seen - it goes back to 2012! She thought it was within the last three years, so we started at 2015. Nothing. '16. Nothing. '17. Bright. Netflix film with Will Smith, Orcs and Elves in contemporary LA, buddy cop film with Smith teamed with an Orc. I immediately thought about Alien Nation, she thought about V. Happytime Murders follows sort of the same paradigm with a Not Us group that's discriminated against in a buddy cop format. V doesn't really count since it was actually an alien invasion trope where the humans didn't realize they had been invaded and conquered until later.

There are other similar movies like Precinct 13 or Chappie or Elysium, but they're not in the buddy cop genre.

If you've ever seen the movie The Player, which you really should see, the Happytime elevator pitch would be "It's a movie like the TV show Alien Nation but with Muppets! And we already have Melissa McCarthy!" Bright's would be "A TV movie like Alien Nation but with Orcs and Elves and we've already signed Will Smith!"

I had heard Bright was greenlit to become a series, but I can't find anything on it. I have found Bright 2 was definitely greenlit, though nothing on a release date.

Have not yet seen any movies released since the beginning of summer. Am afraid to see Happytime Murders because I'll subconsciously be expecting the puppet episode of Angel.

The Player is fucking brilliant.
