I stopped reading X-Men comics probably 20 years ago, so I don't have a clue about Mastermind. And these movies are kind of far afield anyway. It's just another movie night out, and my wife likes the pairing of Charles/Erik.
I was heavily invested in the whole X-verse at the time when the Dark Phoenix plot originally ran. Mastermind was a telepathic supervillain who got a mind-tap into Jean Grey and basically seduced her into a "power corrupts" scenario that leaked over into real life and was the direct cause of her descent into Dark Phoenix. (This was more like 30 years ago than 20, FWIW). Making Professor X into the cause is just WRONG.
