How many songs come up when you search for "sex"?
7, but two probably don't count in context: The Sussex Carol and Dowland_ Earl of Essex Galliard. I don't know if the latter was written by the Earl of Essex or if that is part of the title.

How many songs come up when you search for "death"?
27, including all of the Roger Waters' album Amused To Death.

How many songs come up when you search for "love"?
246, again, heavily influenced by album names such as Images of Love, Lawyers in Love, Love Immortal, Love Over Gold, Negotiations and Love Songs, etc.

This represents approximately 530 albums, a number that iTunes will not readily reveal. That's about the number that I thought, but that doesn't include all of Russet's collection added in.

Having neither an iPod nor MP3 player, I can't play. :( I feel like such a dinosaur. Does it count that I've downloaded one song from iTunes? (Tam Lin, Fairport Convention)

((And just by coincidence, midway into typing this response I was asked what's the difference between an E drive and a D drive by a man who has no floppy on his computer at home (the A drive) but has two CD drives -- and wanted me to help him distinguish the two. Yeah right. Fortunately, one of the people working with him walked up as I was scrambling to not look toooo stupid, and suggested he simply send the document he was concerned with as an attachment to his email account. I said I thought that was a good idea. He went away happy. Oy.))

LOL. I got into MP3s when I found a very discounted Creative Labs player at Fry's. It had a 6 gig drive in it and will hold around 1100 songs. I also bought a 40 gig hard drive and ripped my entire music collection on to it and it took a good 75% of the drive!

It's easy to do, I guess it really boils down to how much music do you have and how much do you want it with you? I do a fair amount of fairly long-distance driving, not that I count 30 minutes going to Alamogordo or the observatory as a long drive, not to mention spending a lot of very boring time in the dark room, so having music is pretty important to me.

Ripping music isn't difficult, the players aren't very expensive any more, and rigging a little transmitter or cassette adapter in your car is easy. Heck, my dad turns 72 on Christmas and he is on his second player and rips and loads music on to it quite frequently.

Oh, so much I could respond to...

Do I want my music with me? I've been doing without so long, I don't horribly miss it... most of the time.

How much music do I have? Tons, despite getting rid of my vinyl and being a cheap bastard about not wanting to buy more than I can't stand to NOT have. In that vein the players aren't very expensive any more is a relative term. I haven't been able to justify even a coupla hundred bucks for something that would be nice but I can't quite consider essential, like dog kibble. Do I want an iPod anyway? Ohmyyesindeedy. And a little one Just Won't Do. Regardless: not right now.

Do I do a lot of long distance driving? An hour a day, any time I go to work, is plenty of time in which to want my music -- and I have a CD player in the car that gets used, if only erratically. (I go through phases when it's NPR, then phases of music, then phases of books on CD from the library.) If I end up taking a class in Tucson next semester, which is starting to look likely, I'll go through a lot of books, I expect, which is what I prefer over music for intercity driving.

In the long run: I'm home, driving to/from work, or at work most of my life. Home and driving to/from work I can listen to my CDs. Work I can't. Grocery shopping and other errands: yeah, I wouldn't mind having my music, but it goes back to the first response I wrote -- I've been without for so many decades, I don't particularly miss it. It's only when you've got hot water and indoor plumbing that you come to expect it!

I know. :) I recognized it.

I never listened to my music much in Phoenix because I'd usually be listening to NPR. It was my main news source. Up here radio reception is marginal, particularly NPR. So usually my radio is off when I'm driving down to Alamo.
