A woman who saw Avenger Endgame in an LA theater last Thursday was diagnosed with the measles Friday

Just wow.

She "had just returned from a trip to Vietnam, where there has been widespread measles activity, according to “Inside Edition.”

The woman was unaware she was sick when entered the theater at 11 p.m. Thursday. She didn’t leave until 4 a.m. Friday, and she went to the emergency room later Friday.

The woman is now under “voluntary isolation” at home."

So the people who worked at the theater were exposed. Everyone in the presumably packed theater were exposed. Everyone at the ER were exposed. A third address is listed in the article.

I don't get why she wasn't vaccinated before she left for Asia. She's described as a 20something: even if her childhood vaccinations were still strong, she should have been re-vaccinated before going to SE Asia.

That is so irresponsible. I thought you couldn't fly without getting all your vaccines? I worry for anyone there with compromised immune systems.

waves hands frantically Compromised immune system right here!  My body stopped producing antibodies a decade ago.  I do immune-replacement therapy, I infuse immunoglobulin weekly from 10,000 donors.  Yeah, I would've thought she'd have to prove immunizations before she could've received a travel visa.  A local friend of mine recently went on a South American junket, and she has the exact same disorder as I do.  One thing about our condition is we can't receive live vaccines, and she needed to be immunized against Yellow Fever, which is a live vaccine.  But apparently she was still able to get her visa and travel.  She still got all her other shots.  When my wife and I went to Germany and Prague I checked to see if we needed anything but we were good since they were all considered first world countries.

At least she got all the shots she could and herd immunity should be able to kick in.

Oh, yay. That's one interesting consequence of having beaten a disease back to the point of nonexistence - people start wondering what the vaccines are good for. Maybe this time they'll skip that part and go straight to getting vaccinated or revaccinated.

It's insane.  I wonder about things like polio or the poxes, much less measles.  As far as we're concerned they're eradicated, but in some countries they're not uncommon.  And some people walk in to these countries without getting updates, add that to the anti-vaxxers, and now we have record numbers of measles cases in the USA.

Exactly. We have culturally forgotten what those things are more, and so one can only hope that having a few vivid cases will remind us, rather than continuing to stick our heads in the sand on the matter.
