RIP: MCU Spider-Man.... for now

Disney and Sony can't come to terms over profit-sharing over Spider-Man movies, which means no more Tom Holland Spidey within the MCU realm. Which is sad. Sony made five Spidey movies which, for me, sucked. I saw a couple, was not impressed, and stopped watching them - but I freely admit I was never a big Spider-Man fan. I loved the latest Sony: Into The Multiverse, and Sony made a lot of bucks with it. I also loved Tom's appearances in the MCU. And Tom is under contract for two more Spidey films, but they won't be able to use any of the MCU characters in it, which will be interesting.

It's all about the Benjamins: Disney wanted a 50/50 split, which is patently ridiculous. They were getting 5% of first day dollars, which is absolutely huge, plus lots of the merchandising, and probably the streaming rights. And they want 50/50? Ridiculous. Now Ars has an update to their story about Feige not being available due to his increased corporate duties. While that may be true, sounds a little like providing cover.

I expect there will be a reconciliation. After all, Spider-Man drifted in and out of the Avengers over the years. And there's just too much money for both Sony and The Giant Rat for them not to reach a mutually satisfying agreement.

I suspect what Disney wants is for Sony to sell them back the Spider and is insisting on these terms because they feel like they should already own it and Sony are being pooheads by not selling it back to them on favorable terms.

I find it hard to fault the Mouse on this one. Extremely difficult.

I'm generally inclined to fault the Mouse for everything, based on past behavior and that they are the largest entity in the room in most problems involving them. Is there a reason not shown so far why I shouldn't?

Seconded.  They're the 8000 kilo gorilla with zero remorse.

The problem is that Marvel sold properties to whoever they thought could make good movies, and that was a long time ago.  It's done, and that is that.  I don't know what The Mouse can do to cancel that contract now that they own Marvel, but guaranteed they have a football stadium full of lawyers looking in to it.  Several - not all - X-Men movie aside, Sony hasn't been a good steward of the properties IMO. Until now. Myself, I'd love to see a Spidey/Deadpool teamup!  That would be hilarious!  And there is certainly precedent for Spidey with the X-Men and FF.

Exactly!  They'll also want X-Men and Fantastic Four and Sony knows how much money they're worth to Disney to reunite the entire Marvel family.  And there's no way Disney is going to want to pay Sony X billion dollars, and I can't blame Sony for taunting Disney with those properties.  Anyone who is capable of shafting The Mouse are heroes in my eyes, even if I don't like Sony!  Talk about moral anguish in me! :-) I don't despise Sony, even though they've done some stupid things like the music CD DRM root kit.  It's just that I've always thought that Sony products were, overall, over-rated and over-priced and just not worth it.
