I'm just staggered by how many of these are own-goals.  The stupid - it hurts!

If you counted a representative sample, I suspect you would find a lot of guys in societies that encourage this kind of risk-taking behavior as a way of making themselves seem better than the other guys around them.

Absolutely true.  I'm sure social media and everyone having a video camera has exacerbated it, a century ago it was things like jumping on the back of a trolley.  There's certainly always been thrill-seekers, and there's always those ignorant of the laws of physics.  Now we have a lot more recording eyes watching. I knew a guy in HS who, if we were teens now, would have people recording some of his antics.  He was good, I never saw him get injured.  He'd probably be in to Parkour if such a thing existed back then.
