Finally bought the rights to the book One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, brought it to Broadway, grew frustrated that no studio wanted to turn it into a movie, so he gave it to his son Michael. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Eventually Kirk was given the consolation prize of an Honorary Oscar.
What a career! This has to be the longest obit that I've seen on Rolling Stone in a very long time, and it is well worth the read. Absolutely fascinating.
