Had my first lockdown food crisis Friday!
Apr. 5th, 2020 12:34 pmSOMEONE bought fat-free milk!
Can't stand the stuff, it's water with too little milk flavoring added and way too thin. I only drink whole milk, I can handle 2%, but the fat-free stuff is worthless IMO.
In Russet's defense, our preferred brand was out of stock, and she thought she was buying whole milk.
So I'm mixing it with whole milk, 2:1, and it's working acceptably. It'll take a week or so to finish off the carton, but I'm not going to waste it.

Date: 2020-04-05 07:18 pm (UTC)I’ve been eating some past their ‘use-by’ dated foods as well and surviving :o) It’s not quite a whole-new-world, but it is being viewed in a different light.

Date: 2020-04-05 11:33 pm (UTC)LOL. I don’t mind heels, but I’m not sure I can handle pseudo-butter. I won’t allow that stuff in the house!

Date: 2020-04-05 11:59 pm (UTC)I grew up with Blue Bonnet margarine. It was about 15¢ a box at the time at the store we shopped at. As soon as I was on my own I began buying Land O’Lakes butter :o)

Date: 2020-04-06 04:46 pm (UTC)Decades later, I'm on to the butter.
People keep forgetting that the reason to not eat the first heel is to keep the loaf end from drying out. (Once you're old enough to eat crusts, anyway.)

Date: 2020-04-06 03:28 am (UTC)I don't drink milk anymore (after a childhood of being allowed to drink nothing but -- literally, Mom didn't even want us to drink water), but I agree completely. I can't even drink 2%; why even bother?
OTOH, I once had the opportunity to drink whole milk, literally direct from the cow, then refrigerated. Much too thick for my suburban-bred tastes, LOL!

Date: 2020-04-06 04:35 am (UTC)I went to farmer’s markets (will those ever be a thing again?) and being offered raw milk. "It’s good for you!" That stuff is VERY dangerous to me! All milk for me has to be pasteurized, cheeses also preferably. My body doesn’t produce antibodies, so that stuff represents a serious threat to me! I do remember drinking it straight from the cow as a kid, I had a lot of rural relatives, but I don’t remember what it was like.

Date: 2020-04-06 03:33 pm (UTC)I basically don't drink coffee at all, or extremely rarely. When driving to Phoenix, 500 miles, I have a mug that I fill with approx 1/4 hazelnut espresso, 1/4 vanilla espresso, and the rest with hot chocolate. And I find that's a good caffeine boost. We have these machines at pretty much every truck stop over here where I can build that or a very similar blend. As for tea, I'm one of those blasphemers who drinks it iced. But at home I mostly just drink cold water.

Date: 2020-04-07 05:37 am (UTC)It definitely is. I can handle 2% if need be, but not skim.
