September 2022. The series will be set in the Second Age, long before the events of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. They say there will be some familiar characters, which will most likely be Elrond, Galadriel, and who knows else.

Apparently they've finished principle shooting in New Zealand, now it's all post-production, VFX, editing, etc.

Estimated production cost? Over $450 million US. Rumored cost for the rights from the Tolkien estate? $250m. Lots of the rest surely went into long-term costs for set creation to be reused over five seasons that they're planning for the series. So the per-season cost isn't too hideous. If you squint. And turn your head sideways.

I'm not sure who's getting the money. JRR's direct heirs are all dead. Well, whoever it is got a pocketful.

The article lists the actors involved, of whom I only recognized one, though a couple of names rang faint bells. And there is one still image. I'd expect a trailer in 4-5 months to gin up interest.

You'll need an Amazon Prime TV subscription to watch it.

Amazon was developing a Middle Earth MMO game, but they pulled the plug on it earlier this year. Their game studio hasn't had a lot of luck of late. It was believed to be a parallel development to support this TV series. Rather a pity, a lot of people were really looking forward to seeing what it would be like.

I had the impression that you already played in such a game.
